On November 12, talks between the International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA) and the US Maritime Alliance (USMX) abruptly ended after just two days, sparking fears of renewed strikes at East Coast ports.
ILA stated the negotiations made progress initially but collapsed when USMX raised semi-automation plans, contradicting earlier promises to avoid automation topics. USMX defended its position, emphasizing modernization to enhance safety, efficiency, and job security.
In October, a temporary deal ended a three-day strike, extending contracts until January 15, 2025, with significant wage increases. However, unresolved automation disputes threaten further disruptions, with strikes looming as a last resort.
Shippers and freight forwarders should brace for potential delays, port congestion, and rate hikes. Plan shipments early to mitigate risks and maintain supply chain stability.
